Pfc. A. H. Davis write from New Caledonia
New Caledonia, April 10, 1945
Dear folks and all--
Here I am late in my letter writing again. Have been up the island for three days. Took a load of natives up there that have been working here. Really enjoyed the trip, even though it was pretty rugged, especially going over the mountain.
It's just a one way pass with just a few places cut up if you should happen to meet somebody. There were seven trucks went up; I went the furthest of any. There were two of us to a truck. We went almost to the other end of the island. Left here in the morning, and didn't get there until 'way late that
night. Too late to find a place to sleep. We were going to sleep in the truck, but one of the Joes told us one of the natives wanted us to sleep in their huts. It had a home-made
bed, made out of grass and sticks--wasn't bad at all. The hut is made out of mud; I think almost looks like cement with a grass top. They had coffee and eggs for us the next morn. We really didn't want any as didn't know how clean it was.
They insisted we drink the coffee, so we did; it wasn't bad at all. We told them we had to hurry and get back here and to put the eggs on some paper. We threw the eggs away as we got down the road out of sight. They (the eggs) looked real
good and imagine they were better than the ones we get at the mess hall.
The natives were really friendly. (I think this one was a missionary or preacher. They are hard to understand, but there were pictures on the wall of Christ, and also several Bibles on the table.
I wish you could see the way the Natives live. They go out to gather fruit, and make their own baskets out of woven leaves-one of the nicest
baskets you ever saw.
On the way back, we picked up a Japanese who rode with us a little way. When we left him at his hut he told us to wait, and brought back one of the finest bunches of bananas you ever saw and they were really good. They also have oranges, lemons and pineapples. The pineapples are really delicious. Stayed at a hotel the second
night on our way back. It is really nice up there; not at all like it is around here. Really did enjoy the trip as it does a guy good to get away from here.
So things really look nice. Boy, how I wish I could be there. Well, folks, I've got to sign off.
Love Al.
